I Don’t Validate

If you click the w3.org validator link in the sidebar (also here), you will find that this page DOES NOT validate as valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Not that it’s the end of the world, but I was surprised when I clicked the link today for the first time in a few days. I take pride in my nicely formed code, but it seems a phantom </p> tag has found its way into my “New Kitten” entry. Read More… »

GooSpace: Lessening the Frustration of 100 Million Users

During the last several days, I’m sure more than a few people have noticed the reduced angst they feel when searching for content on MySpace. Yesterday, for instance, my wife searched for a particular song so she could place it on her profile. I looked over her shoulder, ready to give suggestions for which of the thousand typically vague results she should click to get what she wanted. Shortly after she entered her query, I thought “Wait…why is there just one result?” And even more significant, “Why is that result the correct one?” I didn’t think much of it, and allowed the confusion to settle so I could bask in our seeming luckiness. This morning, however, the puzzle put itself together when I saw that all-too-familiar logo… Read More… »

New Kitten

My wife and I decided to find a friend for our 2 year-old cat Toby. Our search yielded a ten week-old kitten. He’s a crazy, lovable, mischievous ball of fur who keeps us awake at night by alternating between scratching us under the covers and maniacally purring while lying on (and around) my face. After a few days of digging for a name, a Louis Armstrong CD sang out the appellation for our new hellion; we now stand the proud owners of a kitten named Louis. Update: After a few days of trying out the name “Louie”, we decided it just doesn’t fit him! “Harrison” (”Harry” for short) is his new name.

Here are a few pictures for your viewing enjoyment …

Terrain Editor

Earlier this year a buddy of mine and I wrote a C++ program for terrain generation as an academic exercise in Computer Science. We designed it to allow users to generate their own terrain using some easy little tools, and I like to think we did an okay job. Incidentally, it turned out to be a fun little program. You can download it here. (~2.47MB)

If you’re handy enough, you can also convert publicly available GIS elevation data to our simple format and display some pretty impressive stuff (sorry, I won’t do it for you, though we might later change our format to meet a specified standard…take at look at the example files in the installation directory for some already-converted data). Feel free to play around and let me know what you think!

Overhaul

I’ve decided I need something to brush up my JavaScript, PHP, basic social, and MySQL skills.

Over the next (random number of your choosing) months, I’m going to overhaul the look and feel of this site. I’ll change the home page, but the most notable changes will be in the blog…currently the theme is based on the popular ShadedGrey v2.1 theme, but the thought of using a theme that is not (mostly) my doing is far too bothersome for me to bear.

*Edit: As I get deeper into the design, please leave me some comments to let me know what you think of the look and feel of the site!

The Sexiest Man Alive

People magazine recently named George Clooney the sexiest man alive. I was unaware Sparky the Dog is in any way attractive, but perhaps it’s because I’m a heterosexual male. Are we allowed to submit nominations for next year? I think I just might have a chance… Isn't he sexy?

Dolphins can sing…Batman?

From ABC Science news, the results of two new studies (to be presented at the joint meeting of the “Acoustical Society of America and NOISE-CON 2005 in October) show Dolphins are “the only mammals other than humans to recognise rhythms and reproduce them vocally.” In this case, I think my buddy Craig was involved in the music choice…

Reclaiming My Yard…

Shortly after moving into our current house, my wife and I noticed we were overwhelmed by the inebriating smell of cat poop on any given warm day upon approaching the front door. It only took a few moments for me to spot the source(s); along the base of the house in the flower beds were several curious mounds of dirt, each concealing its own little kitty surprise.

The first time I mowed the lawns (unfenced front and fenced back), I couldn’t help but notice many more morsels and their seeming magnetic attractions to the bottoms of my shoes.

It seems that, while the previous owners occupied the home, the territorial neighborhood animals overtook the yard. I have since begun a quest to establish myself as the local dominant creature and reclaim my property.
