The University of Montana Grizcam…

A short while ago, some folks at my beloved University of Montana put a neat little Java applet online and dubbed it the “Grizcam”. In short, a camera sits atop the Jesse Dorm [campus map (.pdf)] and allows web visitors to “take control” for a minimum of 20 seconds to pan the University area. If some other web visitor doesn’t steal control after your 20 seconds of fame, you continue to hold the power glove until you’re forced to give it up (it’s basically a nice way to teach college students how to share). You can also select camera presets to view landmarks of the campus, including the Oval, the “M”, the Adam’s Center, the downtown area, and Lolo Pass. Anyone curious about the University of Montana, Missoula, (or anyone simply wanting to play with a wholesome webcam, for that matter) should check it out. :-)

I will say, however, these are a couple of my favorite views…

*Update, February 13: I alerted the authorities, and they shot a thank-you email back…let’s see how long it takes them to remove our gross little friend.

*Update #2: It’s March 28. It looks like someone else noticed and left the camera pointed right at our dead friend. I have a feeling the folks in charge don’t really care…

Update #3 (April 11): I had come to terms with the fact our fly would not be removed, but had to check anyway (He is, of course, still there). I decided to take a look around and see what this beautiful day in Missoula looks like from the top of Jesse Hall, and stumbled upon this little fella…

Update #4 (June 22): Hooray! Our nasty little friend is finally gone. He had a good run…at least now we have unobstructed views of our beautiful city.
